Udupi: Deputy commissioner Vidya Kumari K has warned that criminal cases will be filed against the contractors and officials responsible for the negligence leading to multiple accidents at the Indrali railway overbridge (ROB) construction site on National Highway-169A. During a meeting at the DC office on Thursday, she expressed deep concern over the delays in the project, which have caused severe traffic congestion over the past two years, resulting in numerous accidents with fatalities and injuries.
"The lack of accountability has led to this situation, and criminal cases must be registered against the responsible contractors, railway officials, and engineers of the National Highways Authority," said DC said.
The statistics are alarming. In 2023, eight accidents occurred, leading to one death and seven cases of severe injuries. In 2024, 10 accidents have already been recorded, resulting in two deaths and 10 people sustaining injuries, ranging from serious to minor. The delays and negligence from both railways and highway divisions have been identified as key reasons for these incidents. The DC added that she would write to the central ministry, seeking action against the involved parties.
The Indrali ROB construction, which began in 2018-19, has been plagued by poor coordination and sluggish progress. Frustrated by the slow pace, the DC issued a directive that the work must be completed by Nov 10.
She also emphasised the need for simultaneous execution of iron welding and girder work, along with the inspection and installation of bearings on the railway tracks. The necessary permission to halt train movement during these installations must be obtained without delay.
SP Arun K said public protests were rising over the project. He pointed out that the inefficiency of officials is directly responsible for the accidents and loss of life. "If these accidents had affected your own families, would you have accepted these delays?" he asked, condemning the constant excuses made during previous meetings. He warned that contractors, engineers, and railway officials found culpable in recent accidents will face arrest and be brought before the court.
