Mutiny Memorial was built by the British during the 1857 freedom struggle to honour British officers and their allies who had died in the battle. However, it not only symbolises the deaths of British officials and their allies but also stands as a symbol of India's independence movement.
During the heritage walk, tourism minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, who inaugurated the 80-day festival, said there were hundreds of hidden heritage sites in Delhi that the public and the younger generation were unaware of.
"Through such programmes, the department aims to present the history of these priceless heritage sites to the people of Delhi and the nation. The goal is to make Delhi a major attraction not only in the country but also globally," he said. "Preserving these sites and sharing their history with the masses is a priority for the tourism department."
Bharadwaj added that the department had been organising such programmes periodically and similar events would be held in the future as well. tnn
