Jaisalmer: A man said to be mentally unstable carried out an unprovoked knife attack on his neighbour and left him bleeding in Bhargav Pada area of Suli Dungar in Jaisalmer on Thursday morning. The attack, caught on CCTV camera, sparked shock and disbelief in the town.
Police said the victim, Sanjay Kumar Bhargav, a resident of Bhargav Mohalla and employee at Akashvani centre, was badly injured in an eye, ear and hand.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital by locals.
The attacker, identified as Suresh Kumar Bhargav, a neighbour of the victim's, calmly walked back home after stabbing Sanjay about a dozen times with a knife, eyewitnesses said. Police were informed of the attack, and Suresh was arrested at his house immediately, said an official.
Sanjay told police he had no prior dispute with Suresh. Preliminary investigations revealed that Suresh, who dabbles in religious practices and astrology, has been struggling with drug addiction, said a police official.
Locals told police Suresh had been openly carrying a knife for the past three to four days. Sanjay's brother, Manoj Bhargav, urged police to ensure the accused gets the harshest punishment. City police station officer Sawai Singh said Suresh is being interrogated and that a probe is underway.
