T'puram: A fast-track special court on Tuesday sentenced a 62-year-old man to 102 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1.05 lakh for sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl.
Judge R Rekha also pronounced in her verdict that the fine amount was to be paid to the girl, and in default of the payment, the accused would undergo an additional jail term of 27 more months.
The crime happened between Nov 2020 and Feb 2021. The accused was the elder brother of the girl's maternal grandfather. She was sexually assaulted when she visited her grandfather's house. The accused molested the girl and threatened her not to disclose the incident to anyone.
While playing with other kids, the girl disclosed that the accused was cruel, and her grandmother overheard it. When asked more about it, the girl explained what had happened. Soon, Kadinamkulam police were alerted, and a case was registered.
The court observed that the act was very cruel and a shame to humankind.
On behalf of the prosecution, special public prosecutor R S Vijay Mohan and advocate Athiyannoor R Y Akhilesh appeared before the court. TNN
