Eyeing 100% score by year-end, govt marks 729 of 3k as literate
Panaji: Of the 3,000 illiterate people identified by govt last year, 729 have now been declared literate after they attended classes and took tests. The results of another 1,289 learners are awaited.
As part of a literacy drive that begun in 2023, when the Union education ministry launched the New India Literacy Programme (NILP) targeting those people aged 15 years and above who are illiterate, Goa identified 3,000 with the help of educational institutions as a part of its mission to achieve 100% literacy by the end of 2024.

The process involved the identification of such people, training through resource adult trainee coordinators specially appointed throughout the state, and conducting a small test before they could be declared literate.

Chief minister Pramod Sawant has been reviewing the entire literacy drive, which also involved the directorates of panchayat, municipal administration, social welfare and planning and statistics. Local bodies too have identified illiterate people and have submitted the data of 1,001 who need to be trained. This process has commenced as well.
Since the NILP is a voluntary scheme, the state administration has requested members of the general public to identify illiterate people who are willing to learn and share their information with SCERT on 8010945237 or 9552265759.
