Kanpur: A three-year-old boy died after accidentally consuming toilet cleaning liquid at an
anganwadi centre in Bhitargaon primary school premises in Kanpur.
A helper, Vidyawati brought the child home after being told by other children about the incident. Shortly after, Nikhil started vomiting, prompting his family to rush him to the nearby Jahanabad community health centre (CHC).
The incident, which took place on Tuesday, came to light on Wednesday after the child's parents lodged a complaint and later blocked the Ramipur-Jehanabad road. The police calmed the situation by assuring action.
Due to his deteriorating condition, he was referred to the district hospital in Fatehpur but passed away en route in his father's arms.
Subsequently, the police registered an FIR and initiated an investigation. Nikhil's father, resident of Aseniya village near Bhitargaon block, Ram Babu Pal has filed a complaint against the school and anganwadi staff, alleging that their negligence led to his son's untimely death.
The news of Nikhil's passing has left his mother, Rani Devi and brother, Saurabh, devastated. The police, led by station house officer Kushalpal Singh, have sent the body for post-mortem examination.
"The child's father has lodged a complaint alleging that the negligence of the primary school and anganwadi staff led to his son's death. A case has been registered. Action will be taken after investigating the matter," said Singh.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety measures and supervision at anganwadi centres and primary schools. The agitated protesters said that the authorities must take swift action to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure that such tragic incidents do not occur in the future. "The loss of a young life due to the alleged negligence of those entrusted with their care is a matter of grave concern and requires immediate attention from the authorities," they added.
