Ludhiana: In a tragic incident, two teenage boys from the New Ram Nagar area lost their parents after their father allegedly strangled their mother before taking his own life. The shocking events unfolded when the boys returned home from school on Friday afternoon to find the house locked from the inside.
Despite repeated attempts to gain entry, no one answered the door.
Concerned neighbours gathered and contacted the deceased man's brother, who helped them force entry into the home. Inside, they discovered 40-year-old Amarjit Singh hanging from a ceiling fan and his 36-year-old wife, Mamta, dead in another room. Amarjit worked for a private company, while Mamta was a homemaker.
Inspector Jagdev Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Sahnewal, confirmed that the locals had reported the incident, prompting police to initiate an investigation and send the bodies to Ludhiana’s civil hospital for autopsy. The inspector noted that the woman’s body carried signs of strangulation, while Amarjit had used a rope to hang himself.
Looking into the man’s motive, police gathered from the couple’s sons — aged 17 and 15 — that their father had been struggling with depression for some time. The children and their neighbours reported that they had never witnessed any significant arguments between the couple. Just the two minors remain in the family. This tragedy highlights ongoing concerns regarding mental health and domestic issues within families in the region.
