“Snowmass, other zoning issues set for Nov. hearing” reported The Aspen Times on Oct. 8, 1965. “Zoning plans for the huge Snowmass-at-Aspen ski area, prepared by Janss Corp. official Ed Beall, gave a hint this week of the type of development scheduled at the area eight miles west of Aspen. The plans were presented to County Commissioners Monday by Edgar Stanton, chairman of the County Planning and Zoning Commission. Commissioners then set a date of Monday, Nov. 22 at 8 PM in the District Court Room for a public hearing on the matter…. The proposed zoned area at Snowmass-at-Aspen includes about 650 acres in federal subdivision tracts 44, 45, 46 and 48 at the former Hoaglund ranch. The land is now zoned A & F. According to the Janss plan one area will have an R-15 classification and there will be two each for R-30, Business, and Tourist. The remainder of the tract will be A & R. Five charilifts are now under construction by the Aspen Skiing Corp. at Snowmass. The ski area is scheduled to open for the 1966-67 winter season.” The image shows beginnings of the development a year later in October 1966. The ski area wouldn’t open for another year in December of 1967.
