Sewage inflow chokes once-pristine Jakkur Lake: Residents
Bengaluru: Jakkur Lake is grappling with a serious pollution issue as untreated wastewater continues to enter it through stormwater drains (SWDs). Despite increasing environmental concerns, local authorities, including BBMP and BWSSB, are yet to address the issue effectively, leaving the lake at risk of further pollution.
Residents living in the neighbourhood are worried about the waterbody's deterioration.

"There is a sewage treatment plant (STP) at the lake, but it lacks proper maintenance," said Umesh Babu, a resident of Jakkur. He also pointed out that a road-like structure is being built inside the lake, further compromising its health. "The SWD next to the lake is the primary source of sewage influx and the stench is unbearable, forcing us to keep our doors and windows shut," Babu added.
Mukesh G, another resident who goes to the lake for morning walks, echoed these concerns, noting that the lake was in relatively good condition before Covid-19 pandemic. "But the situation has deteriorated since then. We fear things will only get worse if nothing is done soon," he added.
A senior environmentalist, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that Jakkur Lake has been receiving sewage for years. "Contrary to claims by some civic groups, this lake has never been free of sewage," the environmentalist said.

Annapurna Kamath, founder of Jalaposhan, an organisation responsible for the upkeep of Jakkur Lake, acknowledged the sewage issue, but assured that steps are being taken to address it. "We are aware of sewage influx from the eastern inlet of Jakkur Lake, and a wetland is being developed to tackle this," Kamath said. She said in addition to the existing 22 million litres per day (MLD) STP, another 7 MLD STP is being commissioned to handle the excess load from the northern side of the lake.
A senior lake official said work to lay new pipelines and construct an additional STP is expected to be completed in 30 months.
