NEW DELHI: Mayor Shelly Oberoi addressed the media on Tuesday, outlining the ward-wise measures planned to tackle the issue of indiscriminate dumping of garbage and construction and demolition (C&D) waste in open areas across Delhi.
She announced the launch of a special campaign and awareness drive in all 12 zones, where deputy and assistant deputy commissioners will inspect each ward to assess the situation.
Additionally, junior engineers from the works and maintenance department, along with sanitary inspectors, will conduct separate checks and submit daily reports on the actions taken to clear the garbage and C&D waste dumped on roadsides.
"They need to certify that the wards are actually cleaned. We are using various platforms including media and requesting people to support our action," said Oberoi.
'C&D waste dumping sites to be covered in Delhi'Oberoi highlighted that illegal dumping near construction sites, on roadsides, and in back lanes has become a common practice, contributing significantly to dust pollution in Delhi.
She explained, "Last year, as per the CAQM directions, we identified C&D waste dumping sites and covered them with sheets. This year too, I have taken a detailed meeting which was attended by the
Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) commissioner, additional commissioners from the department of environment management services and engineering on this matter."
Instruction was issued that junior engineers and officials from the zone will visit sites in all wards and submit a status report. Wherever C&D waste is dumped, efforts will be made to remove it immediately."
The mayor also discussed the steps taken to streamline the complaint filing process on the 311 app and the need for introducing the chatbot. The focus was also on enhancing the monitoring of complaints related to street cleanliness and ensuring that people dispose of their waste only in the designated garbage lifting vans.
"As we approach the festive season, it is our top priority to ensure that Delhi is clean and beautiful, and that citizen complaints are addressed in a timely and effective manner," said Oberoi on Friday. To guarantee the app's efficiency and transparency, a third-party audit was suggested in the meeting.
