ICC Women's T20 World Cup: How the result of New Zealand vs Australia will impact India's semi-final chances

India's women's cricket team faces a challenging path in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup after a heavy loss to New Zealand and a win against Pakistan. Their chances of advancing depend on the outcome of the New Zealand-Australia match, necessitating wins in their remaining games to better their net run rate and secure a semifinal spot.

NEW DELHI: The Indian women's cricket team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, entered the 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup as strong contenders to reach the knockout stages. However, their campaign was jolted early after suffering a heavy 58-run defeat against New Zealand in their tournament's opening match. This loss not only dented their chances but also significantly affected their net run rate (NRR), which could be a crucial factor in progressing to the semifinals.
India managed to keep their hopes alive with a comfortable but slow six-wicket victory over their arch-rivals Pakistan. Despite this win, India's NRR only improved to -1.217, placing them fourth in the Group A standings.
India still trail behind Pakistan, who also have two points but boast a better NRR of 0.555. New Zealand and Australia, both on two points, dominate the top two spots in the group, with excellent NRRs of 2.900 and 1.908, respectively.

The upcoming match between New Zealand and Australia on Tuesday will be critical for India's chances to advance to the semifinals.
If New Zealand win
  • If New Zealand triumph over Australia, India will just need to win their remaining two matches to secure a top-two finish and progress. This scenario assumes that New Zealand also defeat Pakistan in their subsequent fixture.

If Australia win
  • On the other hand, if Australia emerge victorious against New Zealand, India will face a tougher challenge. They must not only win both their remaining matches but also achieve substantial margins of victory to surpass Australia and New Zealand on NRR. This scenario assumes that Australia and New Zealand will win their remaining two games.

Pakistan still in the mix
  • Despite the loss against India, Pakistan still have chances to progress into the semifinals. But they need to beat both New Zealand and Australia in their remaining fixtures. If that happens, the group will be left wide open.

The stakes are high, as the winner of today's clash between the unbeaten New Zealand and Australia will have a significant edge in topping the group and securing a semifinal spot.
This is a crucial juncture for India as they watch the Trans Tasman rivalry closely tonight, knowing that the outcome will greatly influence their path forward in the tournament.
