Assam science, technology, and climate change (ST&CC) department has entered into a partnership with
NABARD consultancy services private limited (NABCONS) to develop and implement a Carbon Credit Framework in the state. The MoU was signed on Saturday, signifying a major step forward in Assam’s initiatives to tackle climate change while simultaneously supporting farmers through sustainable agroforestry practices and the utilization of natural resources.
The signing ceremony was attended by Laya Madduri, secretary of the ST&CC department, Dr Haragopal Yandra from NABCONS, the chief secretary to the Assam govt, and other NABARD officials. As per the agreement, NABCONS will lend its expertise to implement the carbon credit programme and assist smallholder farmers in earning carbon credits through agroforestry practices. The Assam Agroforestry Board and other govt departments will be responsible for carrying out the work, with the ST&CC department serving as the nodal agency for coordination among the concerned departments. An apex body will also be established to oversee policymaking.
NABCONS will be tasked to find suitable project locations, eligible farmers, and providing platforms for those involved in monetising carbon removal units.
