Ahmedabad: The Gandhinagar police resorted to a mild lathicharge in a bid to control a group of approximately 25 youths who forcibly tried to enter a garba venue in Gandhinagar on Friday night.
The police stated that the youths claimed they wanted to identify non-Hindu garba players at the venue and apply vermilion on their foreheads.
Divya Prakash Gohil, deputy superintendent of police, Gandhinagar, said, "We asked the group to send a couple of their representatives to identify such youths.
However, they refused to pay heed and jumped over the barricades that were in place." The police pushed the youths out of the venue to maintain law and order.
He added that the organisers were asked to register a complaint, but no one came forward to lodge a formal complaint until Saturday night.
Police officers said that the youths even claimed that the organisers had deployed some bouncers who were non-Hindus. The officers noted that the group had not informed anyone, including the police. "They tried to enter without a valid passes, which the organisers objected to," said the police.
