Man secretly weds woman, arrested for sexual abuse

Mumbai: A mechanical engineer, Prajit Suvarna (33), was arrested by Ghatkopar police for secretly marrying his girlfriend, at a temple under the promise of an official marriage later. He took her to various lodges, sexually exploited her, and video-graphed their intimate moments. He then blackmailed and extorted money from her.
When the woman and her family sought an official marriage, he allegedly threatened to upload the obscene visuals online.
According to the police the crime started in 2022 when the two met online. Suvarna proposed to her, claiming that he worked in Qatar. He assured that their caste difference would not be an issue and promised to marry her within a year.
In 2023, when he returned to Mumbai, the two visited the temple. They met at lodges, said the police.
In July this year, he secretly recorded their intimate moments at a city lodge. When victim discovered this and asked him to delete the videos, Suvarna refused and sent them to her as proof of his hold over her.
Last month, the woman asked him to discuss their marriage plan with his family which led to an argument between them. Suvarnathreatened to put out the explicit visuals online. He recently told her he had no intention to marry her which prompted the woman to approach the police. —S Ahmed Ali
