Fraudulent label swap: 2 cameras worth Rs 11.4L stolen
Mangaluru: Two cameras worth Rs 11.4 lakh were stolen in an alleged case of fraudulent label swap.
In a complaint, a senior vigilance executive at the regional office of Mahindra Logistics Company in Bengaluru stated that his company operates as a delivery partner with Amazon, and the company's warehouse is located in the jurisdiction of Barke police station in Mangaluru.
This warehouse stores goods received from Amazon in Bengaluru and facilitates delivery to the respective customers.
On Sept 21, around 3:49pm, delivery items with 12 tracking IDs were meant to be delivered to the address under the name of the recipient Amith, who has been named as the accused. The delivery boy, Mohammad Nishak, from the company, called Amith and arrived at the location at 3:55pm. When Amith, accompanied by another person, came to the location, the delivery boy parked the vehicle and placed all the delivery items on the sidewalk to deliver the goods under 10 tracking IDs. Since the payment for these items was made in advance, the delivery boy scanned the items individually and handed them over to the accused, except for couple of items registered under two particular IDs for which payment was collected at the rear of the vehicle by the delivery boy.
The accused provided the correct OTPs for most items, but when he gave incorrect OTPs for certain tracking IDs, the delivery boy resent the OTP. However, the accused's phone was switched off, so the OTP could not be updated. As a result, the delivery boy returned the remaining undelivered items to the office that evening.
The next day, when it was decided to deliver these items again, it was discovered that the orders had been cancelled. As per procedure, the RTS (Return to Sender) counter staff member opened the parcels for inspection. During this inspection, it was found that the labels on the boxes containing cameras were swapped with labels from parcels registered under different tracking IDs. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the accused had fraudulently stolen two cameras worth Rs 11.4 lakh by switching the labels.
When attempts were made to contact the accused, his phone remained switched off. It is suspected that when the delivery boy was preoccupied with verifying the OTP at the rear of the vehicle, the second accused, who had accompanied Amith, switched the labels on the delivery boxes and stole the cameras in a planned manner.
