Mumbai: In five separate cases of cyber fraud, the
Mumbai Police Cyber Helpline 1930 successfully thwarted
cyber fraud attempts and recovered Rs 1.01 crore within the last 24 hours. This rapid intervention by the cybercrime team highlights their ongoing commitment to protecting citizens from online fraud. Police claim that this was possible because the victims reported the matter within the golden period.
Victims of cybercrimes must report the incident within the golden hour period or at least within four hours to NCRP, either by making a call to 1930 or reporting on the website. This helps law enforcement agencies and financial institutes registered with NCRP to trace and block the proceeds of the crime.
Out of this, an important case was lodged by a Bandra-based businessman who received a call from a person who impersonated a CBI official. Under the pretext that he was under the scanner for money laundering, the fraudster asked him to undergo a digital arrest and extorted Rs 1.10 crore. "But the victim's presence of mind to inform the cyber police within the golden period helped us stop his Rs 65 lakh out of Rs 1 crore," said Inspector Mangesh Bhor of the Cyber Police Station at BKC.
The Mumbai Police officials intervened in several cases, including scams like investment scam, money laundering scam, and share trading fraud, where unsuspecting victims are threatened with arrest unless they pay fraudulent fines. Thanks to the timely efforts of the helpline team, significant losses were prevented.
This achievement is part of a larger success story. In 2024 alone, the Mumbai Police Cyber Helpline has saved a total of Rs 114 crore from falling into the hands of fraudsters. The helpline continues to play a crucial role in mitigating the increasing number of cybercrimes in the city.
