In brief: The next-generation graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD are only a few months away, which means we're seeing several discounts on current-gen models. Radeon cards especially are becoming cheaper, which aligns with recent claims that Team Red has delayed its RDNA 4 release to clear the surplus of RDNA 3 inventory.

The holiday season is drawing closer, and Amazon's Prime Days start next week, but AMD fans can already grab some discounts on the company's latest cards.

The Radeon 7900 XT launched in December 2022 with a massive $900 price, something that we said at the time made it dead on arrival. Nine months later, we took another look as the price had dropped to around $750. This made it a much better proposition thanks to its greatly improved cost-per-frame metric, especially at 1440p.

Now, the triple-fan XFX Speedster MERC310 AMD Radeon RX 7900XT Ultra with its 20GB of GDDR6 is down 18% to just $659 on Amazon. The card managed a 15-game average of 82 FPS at 4K (139 at 1440p) in our tests, so it's no slouch, though it's certainly power-hungry.

The discount comes a day after claims that AMD might have delayed its RDNA 4 launch slightly due to a "massive" oversupply problem with Navi 31-based cards, which includes the RX 7900 XT. It seems the company is trying to clear as much stock as possible before selling what will be the more powerful and cheaper Radeon RX 8000 successors.

Another RDNA 3 card that has been given a price cut is the RX 7700 XT. It was released last September with a $450 MSRP, which we again felt was too high. We also said in the review that it would be worth buying if it fell to $400.

Amazon has now dropped the price of RX 7700 XT to $349, $100 lower than its launch MSRP. Even better is that the card is part of a game bundle promotion that includes the excellent Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and Unknown 9: Awakening, essentially saving you even more money.

One caveat is that the model is a PowerColor Fighter, so it's not from one of the more popular AIB partners, but around 80% of all Amazon's reviews are four or five stars.

Our 15-game FPS average for the RX 7700 XT was 91 at 1440p and 52 at 4K, putting it comfortably ahead of Nvidia's RTX 4060 Ti 16G.

Expect to see more price drops on current-gen cards as the year progresses, especially as Nvidia and AMD could announce the successors at CES in January.

Good times.
The new Radeon 8800XT is going to be a major seller for those moving to 1440p.

And the Radeon 7900xt at $650 makes all other cards obsolete.

Im not buying a card from a company that takes more than 10 years to develop a DX11 driver, not even for 1$ :(

What are you talking about? The RadeonHD (Terascale) GPUs had some driver issues, and the GCN GPUs were slow with DX11 games, but it has nothing to do with the driver.

Are you really blind? The 7900XT is beating everything below the 4080 for 650$...

I have been extremely satisfied with my standard 7900xt. It's very compact, which happens to be my main concern. Best GPU purchase I have ever made.

Super reliable, even for Linux gaming. Fast, quiet.

A Reddit post about problems with a single 6700 XT GPU? That is the very definition of an anecdote, not data.

And AMD rewrote their DX11 driver to be faster in some games, which is great. Trying to improve performance is a good thing. Are you aware they had a DX11 driver before that? It even played DX11 games competitively with Nvidia. Shocker, eh?

Sounds like a you issue. I have been mostly using Radeon cards the past two decades, and I had only one significant driver problem 2 years ago, and even then, it was partially a MS windows update error.

And it's not surprising, that a Nvidia, with an 88% market share and with it's massive revenue has much more resources to chisel their drivers.

You're forgetting that most developers optimise the game on their end for nVidia before a driver is even released. So due to their 88% market share, Nvidia has less overall optimizations to do.

Yes, it is a you problem, because I am playing across old graphics interfaces, especially OpenGL and DX9 and DX11, I have more or less zero games on DX12 or Vulkan, and no AMD driver never been good in these :(

8800XT is ready to ship, but AMD will not release it until 7900 cards are all sold and they are sitting on a huge unsold inventory as no one wants them. $659 is still not cheap enough as the $600 at most 8800XT will beat it in every area: raster, power and thrash it in RTing. A 7900XTX would need to drop to $699 max to even become remotely interesting.

AMD needs to sell at cost if they hope to shift 7900's IMO.

Well, I suppose if the bloody greedy *****s had released them at this kind of price, they might well have sold a ****-load more! Let's face it, they will STILL be making a nice profit even at $650 or whatever. Sadly, in my part of the world, we NEVER get to taste such nice knock-down prices....bummer. Still over the equivalent of $1,100 here for an ASUS 7900XT, and never likely to change -because of.....yes, you guessed it ................GREED!!!

Yhe +1 scoffer, also don't everyone forget how AMD priced RDOA 3 so equal to nvidea prices :(
