New Delhi, Sept 30: NLC India Limited, a Navratna Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India, proudly steps into its 10th year of Renewable Energy generationon September 28, 2024. It was on this day in 2015 that the Company made a humble and historic foray into renewable energy by commissioning a 10 MW solar photo voltaic power plant in Neyveli.
Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Union Minister of Coal & Mines G Kishan Reddy, Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Satish Chandra Dubey and guidance from Secretary, Coal and the Ministry of Coal, NLCIL is steadily and surely transforming India’s energy landscape.
Following a clarion call by the Prime Minister in 2015 for a sustained shift to renewable energy as the Nation was graduating from “Megawatts to Gigawatts”, NLC India Limited literally showcased its commitment to this by becoming the First CPSE in the country to generate 1 GW of Renewable Energy.
NLCIL, primarily a Lignite based power generating company, hasventured into renewable energy with 1380 MW of solar power plants and 51 MW of wind power plants. In the process, NLCIL has generated 1234 Crore Units of Green Energy thereby avoiding 1 Crore Tonnes of Carbon Dioxide emissionfor empowering crores of people with affordable and sustainable power and transforming their lives with cleaner air.
Today, NLCIL’s corporate plan envisages 10,000 MW Renewable Energy capacity by 2030. To reinforce this, NLC India has formed new subsidiaries – NLC India Renewables Ltd (NIRL) to Strengthen Renewable Energy Projects by dedication towards asset monetization and NLC India Green Energy Ltd (NIGEL) to drive clean energy programs. NLCIL has also become a member of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), reflecting NLCIL’s commitment to environmental sustainability in the coal sector.
NLCIL has also been keeping pace with the challenges by venturing into RE projects (Solar & Wind power), Energy Storage Systems (ESS), Green Hydrogen, Pumped Storage Hydro projects, Lignite to Methanol, Mine Overburden-to-Sand and Critical mineral exploration for sustainability.
NLCIL is an early bird in Renewable energy sector with 1.4 GW capacity as on date, aiming to increase the capacity by four times. NLCIL has fixed a target of 10 GW in Renewable Energy by the year 2030. Major projects in the RE sector are in the pipeline in Neyveli, Barsingsar (Rajasthan), Gujarat and Assam. On 28th August 2024, (NLCIL signed a 25-year power usage agreement with Telangana state DISCOMs (distribution companies) for 200 MW solar energy at a competitive price under the central public sector undertaking (CPSU) scheme.
