High School Sports: MIAA releases initial power rankings for fall season

The MIAA on Friday released the first installment of its power rankings for fall sports. 

The power ranking formula factors in win/loss record, margin of victory and strength of schedule.

In sports other than football, the top 32 teams in each division automatically qualify for the state playoffs, in addition to teams who finish above .500. In football, the top 16 teams qualify. 

Frontier field hockey, volleyball and boys soccer, Northampton boys soccer and Hampshire boys soccer all secured top-5 spots in their respective divisions in Friday’s release.

Here’s where every team in Hampshire County stands.

Field hockey

Division 2: No. 32 Amherst (4-3), No. 33 Holyoke (4-5), No. 40 Northampton (3-5-1)

Division 3: No. 14 Belchertown (7-1)

Division 4: No. 3 Frontier (6-1-1), No. 33 Smith Academy (5-3), No. 41 Hampshire (1-3-1)
