Preps: Aspen football falls short against Summit; BHS rolls to 4-0 start

The Aspen High School football team hosted Summit on Friday night, losing 22-6. It was 15-0 at halftime, with the Skiers’ lone touchdown coming late in the second half, a pass from quarterback Calvin Delaney to Chile Smart.

Turnovers were costly for AHS all game, with three QBs throwing a collective 5 interceptions to go with multiple offensive fumbles.

Summit, which plays out of 3A, improved to 1-2 on the season. Aspen, out of 2A, dropped to 1-2 overall. AHS beat Grand Valley in the opener, 28-8, before a 24-22 loss at Steamboat Springs a week ago.



The Skiers will close out non-league play this coming Saturday with an afternoon game at No. 9 Kent Denver (2-1), which is coming off a 50-6 loss at Forge Christian (No. 2-ranked in 1A) on Friday. The Sun Devils were the No. 2 seed in the 2A playoffs a year ago, losing to No. 15 Eaton in the first round.

Basalt football continued its impressive early-season run on Friday with a 26-0 win at Evergreen. The lead was only 6-0 at halftime before a 13-point third quarter gave the Longhorns some distance.




Per MaxPreps, QB Kade Schneider had an impressive day passing, going 7 of 11 for 226 yards with a touchdown. Will Tarallo ran for 87 yards on 19 carries with two scores, while Will Daniel had 34 yards on nine carries with a score. Tarallo also had a 64-yard TD reception.

Daniel led the team with 14 tackles, while Dylan Johnston had 10 tackles.

Class 3A Evergreen fell to 2-1 after suffering its first loss of the season.

Basalt closes out non-league play with a perfect 4-0 mark. BHS has allowed only single-digit scoring to opponents in three out of four games, the other being a 42-12 win at Rifle.

The Longhorns have the coming week off before opening league play on Oct. 4 at defending 2A state champion Delta. The Panthers are 3-1 and also have a bye this coming week. They won 49-0 at Rifle on Sept. 13.

Roaring Fork football played Saturday at Prospect Ridge Academy, losing 13-7. The Rams are now 2-2 overall and next play Oct. 4 against Grand Valley.

SOCCER

The Aspen boys soccer team traveled to the Front Range on Saturday and came home with a 1-0 non-league win at Roosevelt. Scoreless at halftime, a second-half goal from Max de Baets with an assist by Ryan Nitti pushed the Skiers over the top.

AHS improved to 2-2 overall. Next up, the Skiers will host Rifle on Tuesday night in a league game. The Bears are 4-1, the lone loss coming to powerhouse Roaring Fork. Rifle was a state semifinalist a year ago, losing to eventual runner-up Coal Ridge.

The Rams are 3-2 overall after a 3-1 loss at Timnath on Saturday. Basalt (4-4) was off this weekend.

VOLLEYBALL

Aspen volleyball is 4-5 overall after its most recent games. AHS lost 3-1 at Cedaredge on Thursday before having the weekend off. The Skiers will return to the court on Tuesday night with a game at Basalt.

BHS came into the weekend 2-3 overall and was set to play at Steamboat Springs on Saturday, although a score wasn’t available by print deadline.

Roaring Fork volleyball is 2-7 overall after a 3-0 loss to Coal Ridge on Thursday. The Rams host Olathe on Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

Basalt softball played Thursday at Montrose, losing 15-5. Now 4-11 overall, BHS had the weekend off before Tuesday’s game at Delta.

Aspen (0-5) had been scheduled to play at Delta on Saturday, but no score was available by print deadline.
