Kelly: An opportunity to be apart of the community

I am writing to describe my experience as a student with the local nonprofit organization English In Action. A few weeks ago, English In Action brought me and several other students to a performance of Come From Away by Theatre Aspen. I really enjoyed the play. When I was young, and still living in Brazil, I went to many cultural events, which I have not continued in my life in the United States. I think that this push from English In Action is the program’s greatest value. I have been part of English In Action for nearly two years. It gives me the chance to go out and learn not only the English language but also gain a greater sense of comfort within the American culture. English In Action also gives me the opportunity to be a part of a community where I really belong and can grow. These positive experiences translate to my life every day. So much of learning a language goes beyond the words themselves and extends to mannerisms and cultural norms. English In Action successfully uses a holistic approach to the acquisition of language and culture, that provides an invaluable service to our valley’s immigrants.
