Disney's Leaked Data: Internal Texts, Staff Info & Revenue Details

As per a report by the Wall Street Journal on Thursday, the data that was stolen from Walt Disney in early July contained financial and strategy information of the company along with some personally identifiable information of staff and customers.

The last update from the company was in August when it said that it was actively investigating the breach and the lost data.

Disney was hacked this summer by a well-known hacktivist group called Nullbulge which claims to have leaked more than 1 terabyte of data from Disney’s internal Slack channel.

Now let’s get into the specifics of the leaked data. It includes:

  • Some revenue figures such as Disney+ make up 43% of the company’s streaming revenue for the second quarter.
  • Genie+, the paid version of the company’s theme park assistant, made $724 million in revenue from Oct. 2021 to June 2024 at Walt Disney World Florida alone.
  • More than 44 million Slack messages, containing all the discussions between employees.
  • Thousands of unspecific spreadsheets and documents.
  • Some personal data of the staff on the cruise such as passport details, visa details, place of birth, and current address.
  • A few login credentials into the company’s cloud infrastructure.

More About the Breach

When the group claimed responsibility for the attack, it revealed that the entire breach was carried through the compromised account of a single employee.

Apparently, the user realized that someone was trying to barge in and blocked their access once. But the second time around, they managed to break in. They didn’t talk much about their methodology but they did talk about their reason for attacking Disney.

‘Disney was our target due to how it handles artist contracts, its approach to AI, and its pretty blatant disregard for the consumer’ – Nullbulge

They also added that they leaked the data because threatening Disney would not yield much. It’s a powerful organization and would have easily defeated the group.

Disney did not respond to our request for comment yet. This revelation also had little impact on its stock prices which hit $89.23 in premarket trading Thursday.
