TL;DR: Firewalk Studios worked on Concord for years, and Sony finally released the game for PlayStation 5 and PC on August 23. Despite being a high-profile title in the extremely popular hero shooter genre, however, Concord has been a big disappointment from a business perspective so far.

Concord has been available for less than two weeks, but its sales numbers are far from encouraging. According to estimates provided by various market analysts, the Overwatch-like first-person shooter has sold only a few thousand copies on both PC and PS5. If officially confirmed, these underwhelming results would turn into one of the worst financial gaming failures recorded in recent times.

According to analyst Simon Carless, total sales for the PC (Steam) version of Concord amount to just 10,000 units. The PS5 version of the game would add around 15,000 units to that count. Concord costs $40, and took a significant financial effort from Sony.

Midia Research analyst Rhys Elliot notes that even a well-made and fun game has very few chances of success in today's oversaturated live-service market. As of writing, lukewarm reviews have Concord earning a middling 66/100 metascore.

Concord wasn't exactly the most sought-after multiplayer experience during its open beta period. Furthermore, the PC release attracted just a few hundred players, while the single-player title Black Myth: Wukong sold millions of copies in its first three days. As noted by Omdia analyst Liam Deane, the Steam numbers are apparently so bad that "even without knowing the exact data on the PS5 side we can be pretty certain that the game is doing very badly."

What went wrong with Concord's apparent failure to attract enough players despite being a full-fledged Sony first-party title? Deane explains that live-service games usually have a high failure rate, meaning not every new party-based shooter can achieve the same success as Helldivers 2.

These kinds of products rely on the network effect, Deane says, with a game becoming more appealing when more and more people start to play it. But Concord's player counts will have to pick up very quickly very soon, or no one will be there to play the game anymore.

Concord should have been a free-to-play game from day one, argues Elliot, or at least launch as part of the PlayStation Plus subscription plan to have a greater chance for success in an overcrowded genre. Sony could still relaunch the game as a free experience to try and pick up more players, but the damage might have already been done.

Making this game F2P would do little to improve it's chances.
Remember that this game had an open beta, and it peaked at 2,388 concurrent players.
It's better than the numbers for final game, but it's still terrible for a AAA multiplayer game.

Funny enough, most journalists continue to ignore the elephant in the room. This game has some of the ugliest characters ever in a game. In a character based shooter, this is very important.

If it were free to play it would have been better becase it doesnt stands out from the rest but has a high price .

For this type of game, unless you have something that you think will make it unique or superfun. Then you are always going to be pushing stuff up hill. There is just too much to get right. Least with criticised titles like No Mans Sky or Cyberpunk 2077. Because of the type of game, you can get it right and become a winner
Highly skilled coop ones already exist. Just want to have some mindless fun you have Fortnite.

Given that, considering the money spent , Sony could offer a 3 million dollar prices to best team in a years time
Asia, Europe , USA then a playoff by best 6 teams in Japan - everyone will hope no other entrants lol.
When I was in the UK there was a story Debenhams a department store was giving away some mini minors afew years before I arrived ( the real ones, not rebadged golfs ) . Was so underpromoted and hidden , every entry won a car . ChatAI says it happened in 1984 - but can't find a source

I didnt know about it, plus I dont think I care about it. Thats a nasty combo ;p

A bunch of ugly characters spouting Joss Wheadon marvel quip humor in a generic AAA shooter game. I'm SHOCKED this didnt do well.

If it wasnt for the developer's attitude to failure, literally nobody would even know what this game was. there are so many of these games out now and most of them are failures.

Hopefully this is a lesson for Sony to learn and stop their heavy push on LIVE-SERVICE games.

Sony really needs to on going back to their roots and continue to offer great single player games instead of the live service crap they're so hellbent on pushing.

Another case when shareholders and profit hungry business kill a creative indsutry. Imagine all those artists who contributed with somthing truly great into this game. All flushed down the loo thanks to business managers...

Even the few people that bough this game are abandoning it.
This is the current player count on Steam.
Maybe on the PS5 it's a bit better, but on PC, this game is dead.

If people won't start boycotting bad products/services, such companies will contue milking the sh*t out of them.

Never heard of the game. When looking at it, it looks like crap. No thanks. I'm not interested in a bad cartoony looking team shooter game. Too many of these out there already.

I'll just drop into Helldivers 2 if I want some craziness with guns.

I would put more blame on the artist myself, in this case. I mean the characters in this game are just down right ugly. At least with the bean-counter types the worst they will demand is bland, "safe" artwork; to get stuff this bad the head art people must be the sort of folk who outright hate beauty.

Looks like a crappy clone/reskin of Overwatch 2. Even if it was f2p it would still have struggled.
