The number of unemployed in Bangladesh rose by 5.6 per cent year on year (YoY) to 2.64 million in the second quarter (Q2) this year from 2.5 million in Q2 2023, according to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.

The country’s unemployment rate increased to 3.65 per cent in Q2 2024 from 3.41 per cent during the year-ago period.

Of the total employed population in the second quarter of the year, 46.1 million were male and 23.4 million female. Women's employment rate also increased in the quarter.

The country’s labour force, comprising all individuals who can work, dropped by 1.3 per cent YoY to 72.8 million in Q2 2024. Of them, 69.6 million were employed—down 1.55 per cent YoY, domestic media outlets reported.

The number of people outside the labour force grew to 49.5 million in the quarter—up by 4.6 per cent YoY.

The labour force participation rate declined to 59.3 per cent in Q2 2024 from 60.7 per cent a year ago.
