Indian Entrepreneurs Transforming Dubai’s Business Landscape

By Satish Sanpal, Chairman, ANAX Holding
Dubai, known for its opulence and ambitious development projects, has emerged as a global hub for business and tourism. Entrepreneurs from around the world, particularly from India, have played a significant role in shaping the city’s economic landscape. Indian entrepreneurs have made notable contributions across various sectors. Dubai’s appeal to Indian investors lies in its favorable business climate. The absence of personal income tax and the relatively low 5% value-added tax on goods and services create a highly attractive environment for business growth. This financial advantage, combined with the city’s robust economy, has encouraged a surge in Indian entrepreneurship across a wide range of sectors.
A recent analysis by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, one of the three chambers under the Dubai Chambers umbrella, showed that Indian investors led the list of new non-Emirati companies joining the chamber in the first half of this year, with 7,860 new registrations. These companies span various industries, from retail and trade to construction and services, further emphasizing the deep-rooted presence of Indian entrepreneurs in the region. As per another recent data, the UAE is home to 3.5 million Indians, close to 30% of the Emirate’s population, with a large number of them engaged in entrepreneurial activities, showcasing the strong business ties between the two nations.
Indian entrepreneurs in Dubai have significantly shaped the city’s economic landscape across various other sectors, including medicine, education, capital investment, and start-ups. They have established high-quality healthcare facilities and advanced medical tourism, contributing to Dubai’s reputation as a healthcare hub. In education, they have founded prestigious institutions that attract a diverse student body. Their ventures in capital investment, fintech, and real estate have driven economic growth and attracted foreign investment, while their influence in the start-up culture has led to numerous successful ventures in technology and e-commerce.
Moreover, Indian entrepreneurs have significantly shaped Dubai’s hospitality sector by establishing fine dining restaurants that blend Indian cuisine with global influences, attracting both the Indian diaspora and international guests, thereby enhancing Dubai’s culinary reputation. They have also ventured into luxury hospitality, creating hotels and resorts that combine traditional Indian aesthetics with modern luxury, enriching the city’s offerings and strengthening Indo-UAE cultural ties. Additionally, Indian event planners have excelled in managing large-scale weddings and cultural events, making Dubai a top destination for extravagant celebrations and further solidifying its status as a global hub for luxury events.
Strengthening Indo-UAE ties
Indian entrepreneurs in Dubai are not only business leaders but also catalysts for innovation and growth. This entrepreneurial activity has strengthened the economic and cultural ties between India and the UAE.
The deep-rooted connection between the two countries is further reinforced by the bilateral trade which has touched historic highs during FY 2022-23. Trade increased from US$ 72.9 billion (Apr 21-Mar 2022) to US$ 84.5 billion (Apr 22-Mar 2023), registering a year-on-year increase of 16%.
The UAE has consistently been one of India’s top trading partners, and Dubai’s strategic location as a global trading hub has played a crucial role in facilitating this trade.
A promising future
As Dubai continues to evolve, Indian entrepreneurs are well-positioned to seize new opportunities and further shape the future of this dynamic city. With a supportive business environment, strategic location, and strong government initiatives aimed at fostering innovation, Dubai offers a promising future for Indian businesses.
The Dubai Chamber of Commerce projects that the number of Indian companies in the UAE will continue to grow, driven by ongoing investments in infrastructure, technology, and trade.
The cultural insights, business acumen, and innovative approaches of Indian entrepreneurs have significantly contributed to Dubai’s reputation as a global leader.
As the city continues to attract talent and investment from around the world, Indian entrepreneurs will undoubtedly remain at the forefront of this growth, driving innovation and contributing to Dubai’s vibrant economy.
