The Economic Times has claimed, citing sources, that the plan to merge Disney Hotstar and jio cinema is almost ready. According to google Play Store data, Disney Hotstar has about 50 crore downloads while jio cinema has only 10 crore. Disney Hotstar is owned by Walt Disney-owned Star India. jio cinema is controlled by RIL-owned Viacom 18. The company is also going to shut down many hindi and regional channels

In february this year, reliance and Walt Disney announced to merge Star and Viacom 18 to form a giant company. The new group will have more than 100 channels and 2 streaming platforms. Apart from this, the company is also going to shut down many hindi and regional channels. This will also save them from the action of the Competition Commission of india (CCI). They are currently awaiting the approval of the CCI and the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

Jio cinema will compete with Netflix and amazon Prime

According to RIL's annual report, 22.5 crore customers are connected with jio Cinema on a monthly basis. At the same time, Disney Hotstar has 33.3 crore users. Earlier, Viacom 18 also merged its Voot platform with jio Cinema. Sources claim that having a single platform will save the company a lot. This will also give YouTube tough competition in terms of advertising. Along with this, jio cinema can also be pitted against Netflix and amazon Prime Video.
