Samsung is a tech giant that operates in numerous regions and across different market segments. It's big enough that it can sometimes surprise you with an unusual announcement out of nowhere. Such was the case at the beginning of this week, as the company revealed a kids' scooter equipped with the Galaxy SmartTag 2 location tracker.

To be precise, this new Samsung-branded scooter is the result of a collaboration between Samsung Switzerland and Micro. The latter manufactures the Mini Micro Deluxe Glow LED, which boasts all sorts of bells and whistles, such as luminous elements activated by artificial UV light or sunlight.

But back to the original point, this new Mini Micro Deluxe Glow LED scooter hides a Galaxy SmartTag 2 in its chassis, which makes it possible for parents to find the misplaced scooter with relative ease using their Galaxy phones.

It only works with Samsung Galaxy phones

The Galaxy SmartTag 2 works with the SmartThings app and the SmartThings Find network. Normally, you can buy one and attach it to virtually anything you want to track on your Samsung phone.

In this case, the Samsung-branded Mini Micro scooter has a special compartment where the SmartTag 2 resides. It's all explained in this YouTube video from Micro Mobility.

As far as the Galaxy SmartTag 2 itself is concerned, regardless of whether you buy one separately or embedded in a scooter, this Samsung location tracker has an IP67 dust and water resistance rating and runs on a replaceable coin-cell battery. It can stay powered on for up to 500 days or around 700 days in Power Saving Mode.

The one potential downside to the Galaxy SmartTag 2 is that it only works with Samsung phones. Even if you have an Android device with the SmartThings app installed, you can't pair the SmartTag 2 with it unless it's a Galaxy phone running Android 9 or higher.

The story continues after our Galaxy SmartTag 2 review video

Assuming you are using a Galaxy phone and want to buy the Mini Micro Deluxe Glow LED with the SmartTag 2 location tracker embedded, you can buy one online in Switzerland. Samsung shares more details on its Swiss portal, and you can buy the scooter from Micro for CHF 129 ($150).

That's $150 with the SmartTag 2 included. If you're only interested in the location tracker, you can buy one from Samsung's e-shop for CHF 39.90 ($46) or a 4-pack for CHF 119 ($139).
