Paris Olympics 2024 Live Updates, Day 8: Deepika Kumari loses in archery quarterfinals; Manu Bhaker finishes fourth in 25m pistol final

Nethra Kumanan finishes 28th in the Women’s Dinghy Race 4 event. 

Matthew Ebden and John Peers (Australia) won the gold medal in the Olympic tennis men’s doubles as they beat American pair Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram 6-7(6), 7-6(1) 10-8 

Deepika loses the set 27-29 and goes down 4-6 against the Korean to exit the competition in the quarterfinal. That’s the end of the veteran’s campaign. 

Deepika accompanies two 10s with a dismal 7, which allows the Korean to take the set 29-27 and draw level at 4-4. 

A thrilling 29-28 win in this set for Deepika, who now leads 4-2 against the Korean. 

The Indian shoots an abysmal six in the second set and loses 25-28 to allow the Korean to draw level at 2-2. 

Deepika wins the first set 28-26 to take a 2-0 lead against Suhyeon Nam of Korea.

Paris Olympics: Noah Lyles closes strong to advance in first round of 100m; rival Kishane Thompson cruises

Noah Lyles finished second in his opening heat of the Olympic 100 meters on Saturday but still advanced and kept alive his hopes for the sprint double.

Duplantis and eight others from Group A make it to the final after clearing 5.75m. Two others from Group B make the cut based on the same criteria. Two more qualify for the final with 5.70m. 

Armand Duplantis surpasses 5.75m with ease. The Qualification standard stands at 5.80.

The Netherlands thrashes Japan 5-1 in a Women’s Pool A hockey match. Meanwhile, in a Pool B match, Great Britain lost to Argentina 0-3. 

Spain beats Japan 23-8 in a Men’s Preliminary Round - Group B match. 

Great Britain wins the gold in the Rowing Men’s Eight event. Netherlands takes the silver while the United States settles for bronze. 

Suhyeon Nam of Korea beat Madalina Amaistroaie 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals. She will take on Deepika Kumari next. 

Deepika Kumari will face either Madalina Amaistroaie of Romania or Suhyeon Nam of Korea in her quarterfinal match. 

Romania clinched the gold in the Women’s Eight Finals, finishing in 5:54.39, ahead of Canada (5:58.84) and Great Britain (5:59.51). 

Tough luck for the Indian, who shoots an 8 in the shoot-out, compared to her opponent’s 9. Bhajan Kaur bows out of the competition but she didn’t go down without a fight. 

Bhajan wins the fifth set 27-26 and the score is now 5-5, forcing the contest to go into a shoot-out. 

The fourth set ends in a 28-28 tie and Bhajan Kaur takes the score to 3-5. 

Bhajan Kaur is now 2-4 behind after Diananda Choirunisa won the third set 28-26. 

The Indian levels the scores 2-2 after winning the second set 27-25. 

Bhajan Kaur loses the first set 28-29 and concedes a 0-2 lead against her Indonesian opponent. 

Deepika Kumari wins the contest 6-4 after the fifth set was tied 27-27. She goes through to the quarterfinals. 

Deepika loses the fourth set 27-29 as the German fights back to make it 3-5 in her favour. 

Deepika wins the third set 26-25 to take a 5-1 lead.

The Indian archer begins her Women’s Individual 1/8 Elimination Round match against Michelle Kroppen of Germany. 

“I was nervous. Things aren’t always meant to be. I am already looking forward to the next round. I was trying to do my best. The fourth place is not a very good place to be in. I have been off social media. I am not checking my phone at all. I am looking forward to having lunch. I have been skipping lunch all this while, training at the range whole day.”

Japan beats Spain 4-3 in the Judo Mixed Team Event and advances to the quarterfinal, where it will face off against Serbia later today. 

An Se-Young of South Korea is through to the semifinal of the women’s badminton singles event with a 15-21, 21-17, 21-8 victory over Akane Yamaguchi of Japan. 

Dhillon is 26th out of a field of 29 competitors after Round 1 with a score of 21. 

Manu Bhaker goes down fighting and is eliminated in the third-place shoot-off by Veronika Major of Hungary. Manu finishes fourth after the shoot-off. 

Another 4 for Manu and she continues to be second after the fourth round of elimination. She is on 26, only behind Korea’s Jiin Yaang. 

A 4 from Manu and now she is in silver-medal position after the third elimination. 

A 5 from Manu. She moves to the bronze medal place. Asian Championships bronze medallist Trinh Thu Vinh exits with 16 hits in total.

Manu hits a 4 again to improve her standing to second. Korea’s Yang Jiin leads with 13 hits.

Manu Bhaker only registers two hits in the first series. But she bounces back with four in the next series and jumps to the fourth spot. 

Raiza Dhillon is placed 15th during Round 1 in the Skeet Women’s Qualification Event. 

Raiza Dhillon and Maheswari Chauhan are the Indians in action in the Skeet Women’s Qualification event. 

How does Skeet work: In skeet, 125 targets are fired at over five rounds. The qualification is shot across two days. Eventually, the six top athletes from qualification make the final. 

Serbia beats Netherlands 4-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the mixed team event. 

Spain beats Refugee Olympic Team 4-0 in the Mixed Team Elimination Round of 32 match. It will face Japan later in the day in the Elimination Round of 16 match. 

The women’s singles badminton quarterfinals will take place from 12 PM IST onwards today. 

Spain and the Refugee Olympic Team will clash in the Mixed Team Elimination Round of 32 at 11:30 PM IST.
