Mooney: Straight shots and flying planes

A couple of intense, local political brouhahas are playing out this year. There will be winners and losers. Wealthy people are used to getting what they want and not getting what they don’t want. Lawyers and consultants have been hired.

Beware of political misinformation and propaganda. Citizens of Pitkin County will get to vote on our airport this November. It’s our airport, and it’s our community that we want to protect. Bravo, Citizens Against Bigger Planes.

The entrance to Aspen question is the second brouhaha.

NIMBYs are writing letters to the editor against the preferred alternative entrance. NIMBYs Barb Pitchford and Yasmine de Pagter speak for $150 million of NIMBY real estate.

NIMBYs are a powerful political force. And what about the nonprofit Friends of Marolt Open Space? Who are their officers? Who donates money to them and where do they live?

Aspen Councilman Bill Guth’s very fine home will be negatively impacted by the straight-shot option. Seems a point of order would need to be called at council if he tries to vote on the entrance to Aspen.

Roger Marolt is for the four-lane, straight-shot entrance. We need four lanes, two lanes exclusively 24/7/365 for RFTA and school buses, police, ambulances, fire trucks, heavy rescue vehicles, and possibly Special Weapons and Tactical, SWAT vehicles.
