Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials investigating sheep killed in Grand County

On the property where the sheep were killed, a wolf is captured on a game camera carrying off an animal’s leg. The animal is believed to be a calf and the image was captured shortly before the sheep were found dead.

On Sunday, Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials responded to another possible wolf depredation in Grand County. Two sheep were involved — a lamb and an ewe.

“The field investigation, which included a necropsy, found injuries consistent with wolf depredation,” stated Parks and Wildlife in an email. “… This is still an ongoing investigation.”

According to the agency, the depredations occurred sometime in the late evening on Saturday, and early morning Sunday. Once the depredation of the two sheep is confirmed, the agency will update the Gray Wolf Depredation Report webpage. Parks and Wildlife officials also received a report of missing sheep in the area.

On July 17, officials confirmed the first wolf depredation of a single sheep in Grand County. This was the first sheep that had been killed or injured by a wolf in the county since reintroduction.

As of press time, Parks and Wildlife has confirmed 15 wolf depredation incidents in Colorado since they were released in December 2023.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
