Reconstruction work on the Grizzly Creek and Jessie Weaver (No Name) trails in Glenwood Canyon is set to begin Wednesday, according to a U.S. Forest Service news release.
The construction aims to repair damage from the 2021 debris flows and improve the trails’ resilience against future high water and debris. The work will involve replacing bridges and reconstructing both the Grizzly Creek and Jessie Weaver trails to ensure hikers can traverse from one trailhead to the other, even during high water.
The closure on the Grizzly Creek trail, previously two miles up, will now extend down to the picnic tables approximately 0.3 miles from the trailhead, according to the release. The Jessie Weaver Trail closure will extend slightly to the first bridge, about three miles from its trailhead.
Funding for the Grizzly Creek and Jessie Weaver Trail Reconstruction Project comes from the City of Glenwood Springs, the National Forest Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, including the Great American Outdoors Act funding.
“This work would not be possible without the gracious support of our partners,” Rifle District Ranger Joe Fazzi said in the release. “We appreciate the public’s patience as we work to restore the connection between these two popular trails.
