Something to look forward to: Microsoft has long promoted the connection between Android phones and Windows PCs, allowing users to share files and functionality between the platforms – though there have been numerous bugs along the way. A new Windows 11 Insider update aims to improve this phone-PC integration by eliminating the need for add-on apps and enabling seamless wireless functionality directly within File Explorer.

All Windows 11 Insider channel users can now view files stored on Android phones directly in File Explorer. Users can delete, rename, move, or copy files between the devices.

This new functionality requires a smartphone running Android 11 or higher and the Link to Windows app beta version 1.24071 or higher. To enable the feature, navigate to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Mobile Devices > Manage Devices, and toggle the option to display the phone in File Explorer.

It's important to note that files deleted on the PC will go to the phone's recycle bin. Additionally, automatic deletion from the recycle bin occurs after five days instead of the usual 30, though a future update will revert the timeframe to 30 days. Microsoft also plans to address minor issues with phone syncing and the PC recycle bin.

To provide feedback, head to Feedback Hub > Devices and Drivers > Linked Devices. You can also open the Feedback Hub using the Win + F shortcut.

File Explorer isn't the only way to share content between Android phones and Windows PCs. Last year, Google introduced Nearby Share (now called Google Quick Share) – its answer to Apple's AirDrop – for Windows users. Those with Google accounts can transfer files between platforms by dragging them into Google's desktop app or by right-clicking the files.

Additionally, earlier this year, Microsoft introduced a feature that allows Android phones to function as webcams for Windows, similar to Apple's Continuity Camera feature for iPhones and Macs. This can be found in the "Mobile Devices" section of the settings.

Microsoft also encourages PC owners to use the Phone Link app to remotely perform Android phone functions like sending messages, making calls, and accessing photos. Unlike other smartphone connection features, Phone Link will eventually support iPhones.

Meanwhile, a recent Apple beta introduced screen mirroring, enabling complete remote control of an iPhone from a Mac without unlocking the phone. All apps and features are accessible. Screen mirroring is one of many new features coming to macOS, iOS, and iPadOS this fall.

Same here, it's the weirdest thing to see this called out as a feature. But I guess since it works "wirelessly" now, that's a big deal. *shrugs*
Ahh - I was wondering what the big deal was as I've also always used my PC to manage my massive MP3 collection on my phone (via USB)... It's now wireless... shrug...

If you're close enough to use a PC to frig with the files on your mobile device then why wouldn't you just plug in the USB cable and get a little charging down at the same time also blue tooth isn't as quick as using the cable

Microsoft is consistently the wealthiest companies in the world and cannot yet get Windows to fully support iPhone... Decades later, it still takes minutes to sync a single video or photo to an iPhone from Windows over a wire. Microsoft is truly a joke of a company living off dumb IT vice presidents still buying their trash.

I'm going to BS here as I would've have an iPhone. But just maybe, just maybe it's because Apple makes it hard and keeps breaking 3rd party access

Apple are horrendous at controlling people . want full access to your Ipad files to a portable drive, stump up chump and get a iPad Pro, iTunes was always crap on PC

Look at people raving about Samsung 9 Ultra. Any coming from Apple are amazed have much access to their files they have , ignoring the SD card and versatility of Samsung's Dex ( I don't have one a Samsung phone , and only a very very old galaxy tab tablet )

Apple is super famous for screwing over third parties , breaking their apps ,access and pushing it's own product

Anyway I have googled nothing , just surmising , so prove me wrong this is 100% a Microsoft problem

I just don't know.. Microsoft never really improves anything. They just promise you a better future - that never arrives. I have been using Windows since before Windows :Oo
They are just trying to divert our attention to 'anything' but the core Windows OS and it's (never ending) issues. 80% of the features they come up with are usually never asked for... #*&@! with 3D Paint etc... please stop jacking my pc on every other (forced) update.
The truth is, if Windows 8, 10, 11... had the word BETA under the logo.. I wouldn't complain a bit or a byte. Just saying. Blaw blaw blaw. Cheers from So.Ca.USA 3rd House On the Left (pls call before stopping by:)

I just connect my PC and phone with an USB cable and I'm ready.
No need to go through an app, to do something this simple.
