Amidst growing concern over climate change, a staggering 75% of Brits admit to being baffled by climate-related terminology, hindering their efforts to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.

The board visually translates the carbon savings of train travel compared to cars and planes into relatable objects, making the environmental impact tangible and understandable.

The study also highlighted a significant knowledge gap about carbon footprints, with 60% of respondents unable to define it.

Despite a strong desire to reduce their carbon emissions, 54% were uncertain about effective methods.

To bridge this gap, LNER has appointed TV presenter Kate Humble as its Carbon Saving Conductor, tasked with simplifying complex climate concepts and encouraging sustainable travel practices.

LNER’s initiative comes at a time when holidaymakers are increasingly considering eco-friendly options.

The survey found that 30% of respondents were willing to adjust their travel plans for environmental benefits, with younger generations showing greater enthusiasm.

Warrick Dent, LNER’s Responsible Business Chair, emphasized the company’s commitment to clarity, stating, “Our Carbon Saving Departures Board simplifies the environmental impact of travel choices, helping to close the ‘carbon confusion gap’.”

By showcasing the substantial carbon savings achieved by train travel – equivalent to heating 387 UK homes annually on a typical day from London King’s Cross – LNER aims to inspire a shift towards more sustainable transportation.

The Carbon Saving Departures Board will travel to Edinburgh’s Waverley Station for the Fringe Festival before being displayed at an LNER-managed station.

This innovative campaign by LNER is a significant step towards empowering individuals to make informed decisions and contribute to a greener future.
