Reading Time: 2 minutesThis surge in applications highlights the enduring appeal of a career in aviation amongst New Zealanders and validates the program’s objective of addressing potential pilot shortages.
Fast-Track Training for Future Kiwi Pilots
The Mangōpare Cadetship Program offers a unique opportunity for New Zealand citizens to obtain their commercial pilot qualifications in a condensed 14-month timeframe, compared to the industry standard of 24-36 months.
This accelerated program is designed to be all-inclusive, covering the majority of training and living expenses for successful cadets (conditions apply).
Selection Process Underway for Inaugural Cohort
Captain David Morgan, Chief Operational Integrity and Safety Officer at Air New Zealand, expressed his delight at the overwhelming response.
“The response to the cadetship has been astounding,” Captain Morgan said in a press release.
“We have been impressed with the incredibly high calibre of applicants from across Aotearoa. We’re excited to have a new generation of pilots to connect New Zealanders with each other and the world.”
Air New Zealand is currently reviewing applications and has shortlisted a select group of aspiring pilots for in-person interviews in Auckland.
The first cohort is expected to begin their training in Arizona this September.
Long-Term Vision for Domestic Pilot Training
In addition to the immediate program, Air New Zealand is actively seeking partnerships with New Zealand-based flight training organizations.
The airline recently launched an Expression of Interest (EOI) to identify potential collaborators for a future, fully integrated domestic pilot training program tailored to Air New Zealand’s turboprop operations.
“We look forward to evaluating the EOI responses over the coming months, with the intention of establishing a similar training programme with New Zealand-based schools in the future,” Captain Morgan concluded.
The Mangōpare Pilot Cadetship Program signifies Air New Zealand’s commitment to fostering a new generation of Kiwi pilots and ensuring a robust talent pipeline for the airline’s future.
