Jay Long, from Austin, Texas, has been designated as
the Fall featured artist for Cottonwood Art Festival in
Richardson, to happen from October 5-6.
Making use of idiosyncrasies, Long ingeniously
combines curious beings, mechanics and sentiment into
his oil paintings. ‘The Outing’ portrays an elongated
elephant carrying a duck, cat, rabbit, frog and donkey
as they travel over a hill, through the clouds and
exploration leaving the city behind. The artist gives
amusing names to factual paintings like ‘The Owltlet,’
that mingles a stoic standing owl with a double
electrical outlet. There is a marvelous sense of curiosity
and pensiveness to the layers of detail and connotation
put into the designs.
Generating mixed-media paintings, Long starts the
creative procedure with an inspiring idea every so often
from music, literature or theater. The sketch of the
awareness is a way of individually deducing historic or
present-day culture. Drawings are shifted to a wood
panel and then cut to an outline. Oil paint is smeared
over collaged text from found books. The portraits are
mounted in artist made box stands and linen frames.
Long said that he is happy and privileged to have his
work emphasized by the beautiful people at
Cottonwood Art Festival.
Official goods with Long’s presented creation will be
obtainable for buying at the festival or online, and
comprises a poster, T-shirts and stickers along with
keepsakes.
