Until the fall TV season begins, new TV shows on Hulu are going to be few and far between. But between now and September, there are few underrated shows on Hulu that are worth your time, especially if you need something to binge.

Two out of our three picks for the underrated shows on Hulu that you need to watch this month were originally broadcast on ABC before meeting early ends. That’s why we’re grateful to streaming services like Hulu that give them a second chance to be discovered. Our other pick for the month is a new Hulu original series that has flown way below the radar, possibly because it was produced for Germany. But that’s also what makes Pauline stand out in this lineup.

The cast of Pauline.
Hulu

There may be some comparisons between Rosemary’s Baby and Pauline, a German supernatural series that debuted this year as a Hulu original. Rest assured, Pauline (Sira-Anna Faal) didn’t sleep with the devil. It was actually the devil’s son, Lukas (Ludger Bökelmann), so there’s a big difference there. In this world, the devil is a woman played by Susanne Wuest, and she has plans for Pauline and her unborn child.

It seems that the child has plans of its own too, as it grants Pauline a share of its powers that affect her in unforeseen ways. Pauline didn’t sign on to be the mother of evil, but she’ll have to stand alone against the devil and her son as she figures out her next move. And there are other players in this game who have their own designs for Pauline and her child.

Jonny Lee Miller in Eli Stone.
ABC Studios

There aren’t too many legal dramas that double as musical comedies, but Eli Stone may have been too unique for broadcast television. Before he played Sherlock Holmes on CBS’ Elementary, Jonny Lee Miller headlined Eli Stone as the title character, a brilliant lawyer whose inoperable brain aneurysm begins giving him visions and hallucinations.

Rather than taking his condition as a curse, Eli interprets them as signs from a higher calling to help those who need him the most. This jeopardizes Eli’s legal career on more than one occasion, but Eli’s ex-fiancée, Taylor Wethersby (Natasha Henstridge), is one of the few who believe in Eli enough to stand by his side even when it could imperil her own reputation.

The friends on happy Endings standing in a parking lot, about to throw items at something or someone.
ABC

Happy Endings starts off with a very unhappy ending for Dave (Zachary Knighton) when his fianceé, Alex (Elisha Cuthbert), leaves him at the altar. That shakes up the friendship dynamic that the former couple had with Alex’s sister, Jane (Eliza Coupe), her husband Brad (Damon Wayans, Jr.), Max (Adam Pally), and Penny (Casey Wilson).

But eventually, these dysfunctional funny people settle back down into a new chapter in their lives, and their misadventures are very amusing. Happy Endings plays a like a quirkier version of Friends, even though it lasted only three seasons. Among sitcom fans, it’s a cult classic, and it’s overdue for a resurgence in popularity.
