Reading Time: 2 minutesDiscover the allure of ‘Blanc de Chine’ porcelain from Dehua County at a prestigious Macao exhibition, blending tradition with modern elegance.
A recent exhibition at an upscale hotel in the Macao Special Administrative Region showcases the exquisite purity of white porcelain crafted in Dehua County, Fujian Province. This event features nearly 100 classical pieces created by state-level intangible cultural heritage inheritors, allowing visitors to gain a profound appreciation for the renowned “Blanc de Chine,” or “white from China.”
Dehua, renowned for its long-standing tradition of porcelain craftsmanship, is celebrated globally for its white porcelain, noted for its jade-like appearance, intricate carvings, and pure whiteness. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Dehua’s porcelain, known as “Blanc de Chine,” represented the pinnacle of technical excellence.
Dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), Dehua’s porcelains were key exports along the ancient Maritime Silk Road. The exhibition merges modern fashion with traditional oriental culture, highlighting the timeless beauty of white porcelain.
To further explore the integration of cultural products and tourism, the exhibition features Portuguese cuisine served on household porcelain utensils. Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), expressed her desire to strengthen collaboration with Dehua County, aiming to create more “culture plus tourism” initiatives that promote cultural tourism in both regions.
Hong Yangxing, deputy head of Dehua County’s government, expressed his hope that the show would introduce the beauty of Dehua’s white porcelain culture to a wider audience. A memorandum of understanding was signed between a local cultural tourism enterprise in Dehua County and representatives from Macao’s tourism sector, pledging to leverage their cultural strengths to enhance communication and cooperation.
The Dehua white porcelain exhibition is hosted at the Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau hotel in the Macao Special Administrative Region and will run until July 17.
