What’s new?
It is finally here! Well, sort of… The much anticipated five-door Mahindra Thar a.k.a the Thar Armada has been leaked ahead of its official debut on 15 August. The leaked images reveal the fascia and the side profile up to the B-pillar as well as the red colour which appears to be a slightly darker shade than what is offered with the three-door model.
The face matches what we have seen in the spy shots over the last year and confirms a new design for the Thar family’s circular shape with LED lighting and C-shaped DRLs built into the assembly. Also visible are the fender-mounted indicators, fog lamps and six-slat grille of which the last will help it stand out from its three-door sibling.
The second picture confirms the latch design element, old-school door handles and large wing mirrors with the word Thar written on them. These are all design cues lifted straight from the three-door Thar and should help both cars develop a family identity.
Expanded feature list
Mahindra is expected to significantly boost the feature list of the five-door model with things like a 360-degree camera (visible in the photos) climate control with rear vents, bigger touchscreen infotainment system, digital cluster, connected car technology, level-2 ADAS, powered and ventilated front seats and a split-folding second row for additional storage space.
Powertrain and competition
The Armada will share its powertrains with the three-door model and this means a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel both of which get a six-speed MT or a six-speed AT. Depending on the variant, there’s a full-fledged 4WD system and in fact, we have put this very system through its paces during the 2023 CarWale Off-road Day.
This will be a significant car for Mahindra as it will arrive in a price bracket shared with the XUV700 and Scorpio N and is expected to take share from both of them due to its USPs. It will also take on cars like the MG Hector Plus, Hyundai Alcazar and the Force Gurkha five-door.
