Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, has announced that the platform will shift its focus away from long-form video content to better maintain its core mission of connecting users with friends. In a recent video, Mosseri emphasized the importance of short-form videos in fostering social interactions on the app.
Despite allowing videos of up to one hour and previously promoting longer content through IGTV, Mosseri explained that long-form videos could potentially dilute Instagram’s identity. He pointed out that the platform’s primary roles are to facilitate friendships and encourage exploration of interests, primarily through short-form video content.
Mosseri elaborated that these two objectives are interrelated, as users often share engaging short videos with friends, thereby enhancing their social experience. In contrast, long-form videos—typically exceeding 10 minutes—tend to reduce interaction among friends, leading to less sharing and engagement within the community.

Highlighting a specific example, Mosseri noted how a humorous soccer clip can bring users together when shared among friends who share a passion for the sport. This interaction is vital for Instagram’s mission to connect like-minded individuals and strengthen social ties.
As a result, Instagram will continue to prioritize short video content, ensuring that the platform remains a space for vibrant social connections and shared experiences.
