Four kids attending a local day camp were hit by a massive falling tree branch, sending three of the campers to the hospital on Thursday.

The branch weighing “thousands of pounds” reportedly broke off a tree at the Father Mac’s Playground in Norwood, where the recreation department holds a day camp.

That falling branch then struck four of the campers who were sitting on a bench under the tree.

Three of the kids were transported to area hospitals. The worst injury was reportedly an ankle injury.

“No injuries were serious,” Norwood Police Chief Christopher Padden told reporters at the scene. “One girl had her foot pinned under a portion of the tree, but everybody looks like they’re going to be OK.”

Firefighters used their tools to lift the heavy branch that weighed “thousands of pounds,” Padden said.

“The branch was very heavy, it was a very big branch,” the chief added. “We were very fortunate that there weren’t more kids because if that branch had landed on somebody, it would have been a lot worse.”

Many campers were away on a field trip, so the camp wasn’t as full as normal.

Following the incident, the Norwood Public Works Department was conducting additional trimming and branch removal at the site.
