The travel experience might be different for female visitors. The culture of machismo is prevalent in Guatemala, where local women typically avoid bars and cantinas alone due to the risks of sexual harassment and violence. Even when paired with another woman, they may still face harassment. If you plan to go out drinking, it’s best to do so in a mixed group, as the presence of men can deter unwanted advances.

Female travellers might also encounter micro-aggressions, such as being talked over or ignored in favor of the men in their group. Additionally, they are often held to higher standards than male travelers regarding dress and behaviour in social settings like bars and parties. Sexual harassment and violence are significant risks, with a low conviction rate for offenders.

Despite these challenges, women travelers can find solidarity among local women, who tend to be protective of female tourists traveling alone. If you ever feel uncomfortable, try to move closer to groups of other women for safety.

Guatemala offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural experiences, making it a must-visit destination in Central America. Whether exploring ancient ruins, enjoying the natural landscapes, or immersing oneself in the local culture, visitors will find Guatemala a fascinating and enriching destination. Hoping for easier visa free entry policies for Guatemala’s tourism industry to develop.
