Japan Airlines recently introduced a First Class dining service on their direct Sydney (SYD) to Tokyo Haneda (HND) route, in collaboration with gategourmet.

On July 9, 2024, in Zurich, Switzerland, Japan Airlines proudly announced the successful inauguration of this service that began on June 1, 2024. The service is a notable upgrade to JAL’s premium offerings, reinforcing its dedication to delivering exceptional service and enhancing the travel experience for its discerning passengers.

Prior to this inaugural service, the gategourmet team from Oceania was brought to JAL’s Japanese headquarters for thorough preparations. To ensure a seamless start, JAL also sent two senior representatives to the gategourmet Sydney facility for an intensive three-day session, where they evaluated and fine-tuned the operations.

The Sydney-based gategourmet team displayed remarkable skill and knowledge in culinary preparation, exceeding the high standards expected for First Class service. The menu, a collaborative effort, features exquisite selections from both Japanese and Western culinary traditions, prioritizing high-quality ingredients and visual appeal.

All equipment used in First Class was meticulously inspected and prepped, receiving high praise for its efficient management. The successful implementation was met with great approval from JAL headquarters, highlighting the professionalism, skill, and commitment of the gategourmet staff.

This initiative not only garnered positive responses from passengers but also strengthened the collaborative bond between Japan Airlines and gategroup. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to providing exceptional service.

Recently, gategroup’s Executive Chef of Culinary Excellence, Steve Sweetman, and Director of Commercial Oceania, Sharon Meaker, joined forces with the Sydney team to brainstorm and design new menu cycles for all cabin classes, building on the success of the newly introduced First Class service.

As a global leader in airline catering and on-board retail, gategroup continues to enhance the travel experience with superior culinary offerings and innovative solutions.

Japan Airlines (JL) concluded an impressive fiscal year on March 31, 2024, surpassing anticipated financial targets with substantial gains in revenue and profit. This achievement underscores a robust resurgence in travel demand, especially for international routes to Japan following the pandemic.

The consolidated revenue for the Japan Airlines Group soared to JPY 1.6518 trillion (approximately USD 10.7 billion), marking a notable 20% increase from the previous year.
