Air India and Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA) have signed a significant codeshare agreement May 2024 marking a new chapter in air travel connectivity between India and Japan. This strategic partnership between Air India and ANA is set to provide a host of benefits to passengers, including enhanced travel options and seamless connectivity across both airlines’ networks.

Enhanced Travel Opportunities Between India and Japan

Starting from May 23, 2024, this new aviation industry commercial partnership will enable customers of both Air India and ANA to enjoy a broader selection of flights between the two countries. The codeshare agreement is designed to simplify travel arrangements, allowing passengers to fly to their desired destinations with a single ticket that combines flights operated by both airlines.

The agreement will officially be available for booking from April 23, 2024. Under this arrangement, Air India will add its ‘AI’ designator code to ANA’s flights between Tokyo Haneda and Delhi, as well as Tokyo Narita and Mumbai. Conversely, ANA will add its ‘NH’ designator code to Air India’s flight between Tokyo Narita and Delhi. This integration of services is expected to significantly enhance the convenience and travel options for passengers flying between these major hubs.

Seamless Travel Experiences for Indians

Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial & Transformation Officer at Air India, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “This codeshare agreement with All Nippon Airways marks an important step forward in connecting India and Japan. This collaboration broadens our network connectivity and offers our guests seamless travel experiences and a wider choice of flights between the two countries. We look forward to a successful collaboration with ANA and exploring further avenues for cooperation in the future.”

The codeshare agreement is more than just a commercial partnership; it represents a commitment to providing passengers with a streamlined and efficient travel experience. By leveraging the strengths of both airlines, passengers can expect improved flight schedules, reduced travel times, and greater flexibility in planning their journeys.

Future Expansion Plans

In addition to the initial routes covered by the codeshare agreement, Air India and ANA are considering further expanding their cooperation to include additional routes. This potential expansion could further enhance the connectivity between India and Japan, making travel between these two vibrant countries even more accessible and convenient.

The partnership aims to meet the growing demand for air travel between India and Japan, catering to both business and leisure travelers. With Japan being a major business hub and a popular tourist destination, and India’s rising prominence as a global economic power, the enhanced connectivity is expected to benefit a wide range of passengers.

The new codeshare agreement comes at a time when travel between India and Japan is witnessing significant growth. In 2023, Japan welcomed approximately 23,200 visitors from India in April alone. This number highlights the increasing interest of Indian tourists in exploring Japan, driven by the cultural ties and business opportunities between the two nations.

Overall, Japan saw a strong recovery in international tourism in 2023, with over 25 million visitors, which is about 80% of the record high of 32 million in 2019. This resurgence in tourism is supported by favorable exchange rates and Japan’s renowned hospitality and tourist attractions. The addition of enhanced connectivity through the codeshare agreement between Air India and ANA is expected to further boost these numbers.
