Starting September 15, 2024, Air India will introduce daily nonstop flights connecting Delhi with Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, utilizing the Airbus A320neo aircraft configured for two classes. This new route not only provides an additional travel option for the increasing traffic between India and Malaysia but also extends Air India’s presence in Southeast Asia, facilitating greater access to its global network for Malaysian travelers.

The World Travel & Tourism Council’s 2024 Economic Impact Research highlights a landmark year for Malaysia’s tourism sector, with expectations to surpass pre-pandemic achievements in economic contribution, employment, and domestic tourism spending. The sector is poised to contribute MYR 198.7 billion to the national economy—up 1.6% from 2019 and accounting for 10.5% of the GDP. Employment in the sector is also set to rise to over 2.4 million jobs, marking a 5.2% increase from last year and exceeding 2019’s peak by 5.3%.

Domestic visitor spending is predicted to reach MYR 106.5 billion, a significant leap over previous years, while international spending is expected to climb to MYR 93.7 billion, up 27.8% from 2023, though still slightly below 2019 levels by 6.2%.

This growth is supported by the Malaysian government’s ‘Visit Malaysia 2026’ initiative, a strategic plan to draw global tourists in the upcoming years.

The new service strengthens the burgeoning tourism and trade link between India and Malaysia. Besides catering to passengers flying directly between the two countries, the route will also offer convenient one-stop connections from Europe and North America, enhancing access to Malaysia’s attractions for travelers from the US, Canada, the UK, and Europe through Delhi.

Presently, Air India operates nonstop flights from India to five destinations in Southeast Asia: Singapore; Bangkok and Phuket, Thailand; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; and Yangon, Myanmar. Reservations for the new Kuala Lumpur service are now open on Air India’s website and through global travel agents.
