Göteborg Landvetter Airport earns a high commendation in the Eco-Innovation Award for its outstanding environmental efforts.

Göteborg Landvetter Airport, operated by Swedavia and the second-largest in Sweden, has earned the “highly commended” distinction in the Eco-Innovation Award category from Airports Council International Europe (ACI). This award places it among the top European airports recognized for their environmental and climate initiatives. It was chosen from a pool of 500 airports across 50 European countries for its exemplary contributions to aviation’s shift towards fossil-free operations. Swedavia, which manages ten airports, is globally acknowledged for its minimal environmental footprint in airport management.

In December 2023, Göteborg Landvetter, alongside Malmö Airport, also achieved the pinnacle of environmental performance by securing level 5 certification in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) framework. This framework assesses airports’ climate efforts against the objectives of the Paris Agreement, marking Göteborg Landvetter as a leader in sustainable airport operations within the Nordic region and globally.

“It is of course very gratifying to see Swedavia and Göteborg Landvetter being highly commended in the Eco-Innovation Award from ACI. All the work we have done together to contribute to fossil-free aviation and fossil-free airports continues to bear fruit. We carry out extensive and innovative environmental and climate transition work and have adapted our own operations by using HVO100 for our vehicles, green electricity for the entire airport and fossil-free gas, for example. At the same time, we are now also helping our partners at Landvetter make a smoother transition through our partnership plan. We have a broad palette in our overall transition work, and it is of course encouraging that this is being recognised,” says Anna Strömwall, Airport Director of Göteborg Landvetter Airport at Swedavia.

As of 2020, Swedavia set a global precedent by becoming the first airport operator to achieve fossil-free status in its operations across all ten of its airports. Now, the company has set its sights on ensuring that all ground operations conducted by external operators at these airports also reach fossil-free status by the end of 2025. Looking further ahead, Swedavia’s ambitious targets include achieving fossil-free operations for all domestic flights at Swedish airports by 2030 and for international flights by 2045.
