Cyprus eyes direct US flights and visa-free travel for the American tourists: What you need to know?

Cyprus is in talks with an unnamed American airline to establish visa-free travel and direct flights between the US and the Mediterranean island nation.

This move comes amidst Cyprus‘ efforts for its citizens visiting the United States.

The discussions were revealed by Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulides at the Annual General Meeting of the Cyprus Hotels Association (PASYXE).

A representative of a US airline is currently in Cyprus for talks exploring the possibility of direct flights,” Christodoulides stated.

Strategic dialogue paves the way for visa-free travel

These discussions coincide with a new Strategic Dialogue between Cyprus, a member of the European Union (EU), and the United States.

Currently, Cypriot citizens require visas to enter the US. The Cypriot government hopes to change this policy by the end of 2024 or early 2025.

Meeting the visa-free Requirements

The VWP allows citizens from participating countries to visit the US for up to 90 days without a visa.

A key requirement for VWP inclusion is a visa rejection rate below 3% for applicants from participating countries

Letymbiotis highlighted Cyprus’ progress in meeting this target, with rejections close to the threshold in 2023.

“Out of 100 applications made by Cypriot passport holders, fewer than three should be rejected,” he explained.

“Last year we were very close to the target, and we hope that this year we will be able to reach it.”

Next Steps: Data Submission and Evaluation

Letymbiotis added that Christodoulides’ Deputy Minister is preparing data for submission to the US for evaluation. This evaluation process typically takes three months.

The goal for the end of 2024 or early 2025 is absolutely achievable, Letymbiotis concluded.

The prospect of direct US flights coupled with visa-free travel is expected to boost Cyprus’ tourism industry, making it a more attractive destination for American travelers.
