Q. I’m a manager — can I just create a dress code? I haven’t seen anything and want to make sure my team has standards when meeting with clients and that I set an example.

A. Talk to HR and talk to your boss first. Ask if anything has been documented and if so, communicate it to all employees, in particular with your team. If there isn’t a specific policy, don’t just create one. Again, talk to HR and your boss to collaborate. Since Memorial Day weekend has come and gone, usually that’s a pivotal point for companies to remind employees of the policy, so now is a great time to speak with policy makers to ensure it’s followed.

Q. I’ve been interviewing candidates for our open position that’s been available for two weeks and we’ve gotten more than 1,000 resumes! We are getting through them and look at each and every resume. Please let job seekers know to not give up! We struggle too on our end to fill roles with qualified candidates fast.

A. Thanks for your note. When I worked in corporate recruiting, I wished candidates knew that we wanted to fill the jobs, often even faster than they wanted to start!

We’re in this together, and yes, for job seekers, I know it can be arduous and feel depressing, especially if you’re being ghosted, especially if you’re making it to the final round … please do not give up.

Pivot to a temporary Plan B, pursue side hustles, keep your mental health protected, surround yourself with loving, caring people … and keep going. You got this.
