CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. — The town was recently awarded $3,450,356 for the renovation of the intersection of Sitterly Road and Clifton Park Center Road.
According to a press release, the new traffic safety and pedestrian access project complements the previously completed improvements in the Sitterly Road Corridor including intersections at Woodin Road and Crossings Boulevard as well as the replacement of the Sitterly Road Bridge. The town requested the new bridge include pedestrian accommodations and DOT’s plan for the new bridge included this important feature.
“The new project continues our improvements in the Sitterly Road Corridor and the Town Center,” Town Supervisor Phil Barrett said in the release. “Improving our roadways and expanding pedestrian access are two important goals of the Town Center Plan and will promote the success of this vital financial engine for Clifton Park and Saratoga County.”
The benefits resulting from the proposed project are continuous pedestrian mobility from various neighborhoods in Clifton Park and Halfmoon to commercial entities in the Exit 9 area and improved traffic flow.
The sidewalk project will resolve the pedestrian facility gaps along Sitterly Road and Clifton Park Center Road. New sidewalks on Sitterly Road will provide a safe, continuous route for residents between their homes and Crossing Boulevard and Clifton Park Center Mall and the Town Center Area.
The single-lane roundabout at Sitterly Rd/Clifton Park Center Rd/Mall Entrance will enhance intersection capacity, reduce congestion, and reduce delay during peak hours, and include new crosswalks for pedestrians.
The roundabout, sidewalks and crosswalks implement the public plan, Exit 9 Linkage Study for Clifton Park & Halfmoon by BFJ, that states: “a roundabout at the intersection of Sitterly Rd, Clifton Park Center Rd, and the Mall, could improve traffic flow and would act as a traffic calming measure at this location.”
The Sitterly Road Improvement Project is complemented by another project in the area that has just been approved by NYSDOT for funding.
The Clifton Country Road Corridor Pedestrian and Bike Improvement Project remains in the planning process. This project will enhance pedestrian accommodations and walkability along Clifton Country Road.
From its intersection with NYS 146, south to its intersection with Clifton Park Center Road, the project includes replacing older walkways with ADA-compliant sidewalks and adding new sections to fill the gaps in the existing sidewalk system and high visibility pedestrian-activated crosswalks.
