MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Melbourne Police Department is investigating a shooting Friday at the Melbourne Orlando International Airport involving two airport police officers.
According to officials, the officers fired because a man in a vehicle was trying to get on airport property at security gates so he could get on the air field. Authorities said the man said he wanted to get on an aircraft.
Officers approached the vehicle, and the man was inside and had a weapon, authorities said.
The man did not get within the secure perimeter, and all airport operations continue as normal, officials said.
The unnamed man was taken to an area hospital, but his condition is not known at this time, stated authorities.
No officers were injured.
The Florida Aviation Administration and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement also responded to the scene.
The officers were placed on administrative leave while the FDLE continues its investigation, authorities said.
No other information has been released at this time.
