Reading Time: 2 minutesAlstom, a worldwide pioneer in intelligent and eco-friendly transportation solutions, celebrates the recent extensions of Paris’s Line 14 both to the north and south, which were inaugurated on Monday, June 24. Now, passengers can journey from Saint-Denis Pleyel to Orly Airport in just 40 minutes via the MP14, Alstom’s advanced rubber-tyred metro train. It is anticipated that this line will serve up to one million passengers daily.
The delivery of these MP14 trains has met all commitments to RATP and Île-de-France Mobilités, enabling the timely launch of these line extensions.
Remarkable Effort by Alstom Teams
To meet this goal, Alstom initiated an extraordinary mobilization strategy. At the Valenciennes Petite-Forêt facility, tasked with assembling the trains, a second production line was inaugurated and staffing levels were increased. Teams were organized to work extra hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Other Alstom locations also contributed significantly, ensuring timely delivery of essential train components like bogies, motors, traction systems, onboard electronics, and safety IT systems. Overall, more than 1,000 Alstom employees across seven French sites were involved in successfully executing this project.
Their dedication has yielded remarkable industrial achievements, producing nearly one MP14 trainset per week for lines 4, 11, and 14. At the Le Creusot facility, up to 15 bogies are manufactured weekly specifically for the MP14 project.
“I would like to pay tribute to the exceptional work of our teams on the MP14 project, which will enable us to meet the mobility needs of millions of people living in the Greater Paris region. This success is the result of the unwavering commitment of our employees, who have deployed their expertise and know-how to design and deliver a high-quality product on a timely manner, so that we can meet the deadlines for these extensions,” emphasises Jean-Baptiste Eyméoud, President of Alstom France.
State-of-the-Art Train Design for Optimal Passenger Experience
The MP14 metro features an innovative design that enhances train flow and capacity. Its “boa” design, which allows open intercirculation, lets passengers move freely from one end of the train to the other. Large entrance areas improve accessibility, featuring “boomerang”-shaped seats and alcove-themed interiors that foster both comfort and privacy.
The MP14 also includes LED lighting that provides security by eliminating dark spots and includes various comfort-enhancing features such as temperature-controlled air systems and a comprehensive video surveillance system. Dynamic onboard passenger information is also available.
Sustainability Milestones with MP14
The MP14’s electric braking system captures energy and returns it as electricity to the network, leading to nearly a 20% reduction in energy usage. Additionally, the train is 40% quieter and boasts a 95% recyclability rate. Its modular design allows for upgrades over its lifetime, and it includes a fully computerized safety control system that ensures the highest levels of safety while being easy to maintain.
Significant Figures for MP14
Alstom has received orders for 131 trainsets for lines 4, 11, and 14, with over 100 currently operational. The MP14 metros have collectively covered more than 10 million km across the Greater Paris network. Available configurations include eight-car trains without a driver’s cab for Line 14, six-car trains for Line 4, and five-car configurations with a driver’s cab for Line 11.
